Technology News

Paprima technology on state of the art machines

As a general rule, improved efficiency normally means a high paper machine speed, a large paper width and a high degree of availability. Paper machine speeds have reached, and even surpassed the 2000 m/min mark.

A compilation as of January 2008 by PPI illustrates that these developments mostly were achieved in Europe and Asia. The world records for a number of paper grades is shown in the table below, and provides a glimpse in which countries and regions these state-of-the-art technologies were installed. The highlighted names reflect customers where Paprima equipment is installed and contributes in achieving these records ! Jobs not highlighted are on order.

IMPROVE YOUR TURN-UP EFFICIENCY

A high-speed, tail turn-up at the sheet center using high-pressure water cutting jets will increase reel turn-up efficiency and reduce spool bottom waste

It is common practice to make the web transfer at the reel from a wound spool to a fresh spool by cutting an edge tail with a wet-end tail cutter, flipping the tail up on to the new spool with glue, and then widening the tail to full sheet width with the traversing tail cutter. There are two main problems with this turn-up method. First, the tail is normally flipped up by applying glue manually to the spool. This procedure is both dangerous to the operator and inefficient because the process relies on the glue to rip up a wide tail. Second, the wet-end tail cutter then enlarges the tail to full sheet width at slow speed. This slow enlargement builds a log on the spool with a tapered profile as the successive wraps spiral from the tending side of the machine to the backside. This “carrot” profile results in hundreds or even thousands of meters of wasted product at the converting operation.

Reel-Jet  Installation

The Paprima Reel-Jet is a completely automated, high-speed, dual cutting, water-jet tail cutter. It is positioned above the sheet just ahead of the reel and cuts a narrow tail using two circa 1000bar water jets. The cuts are made on the reel drum surface at the sheet center as close to the spool nip as possible and can be either intersecting to make a free tail tip or parallel cut, depending on sheet weight. The tail is then transferred to the spool with a small amount of water-soluble glue that is sprayed directly on to the tail. Only about 10ml of glue and 10ml of high-pressure water are needed to make the turn-up, which takes about 1 second to complete. It is fast, simple and extremely clean and efficient.

The Reel-Jethas gained a worldwide acceptance and reputation as the most efficient reel turn-up system available on paper, board and tissue grades. Recently Reel-Jets™ have been installed worldwide at the rate of about 15 per year with many of the most recent ones applied on tissue grades. The reasons for this are simple:

  • 0.5%-1+% production increase is common on tissue/towel
  • 99% turn-up efficiency is achieved from the lightest tissues to the heaviest towels
  • Symmetrical parent roll starts – no “carrot” profiles
  • Spool bottom waste is reduced to 100m
  • Extremely low glue consumption and cost – circa 0.10EUR/turn-up
  • Extremely low maintenance cost – circa 10,000EUR/yr
  • Project cost is typically less than 350,000 EUR
  • Paybacks are typically a few months and often as short as several weeks

In summary, the Paprima Reel-Jet water-jet reel turn-up system has proven itself to be a versatile performer, consistently increasing turn-up efficiency and reducing bottom waste to levels generating fast project paybacks.
